When I heard this new I was outraged that something like this could happen. Why were these boxes just placed in a storage closet and forgotten?
The Dallas Police Department is now investigating after hundreds of cases were found with some dating back several years. The DPD has started to take action by transferring the two detectives that were in charge of these cases out of the family violence unit.
It is important to note that this is not the first time something like this has happened. Earlier this year, a 40 year veteran detective resigned after boxes of cases were found in his garage. The detective stated that he started taking the cases home because they were overwhelming him at work but he couldn't keep up with them. The department stated that there were 200 cases that he should have filed charges on.
The most devastating part of this it that some of the victims were later assaulted again. It makes ones wonder of the new boxes they found how many of those victims were later assaulted again. To make matters worse what if a victim was killed because charges were never filed. But what makes this even more stunning is that domestic violence is one of the most chronically under reported crimes. If police departments can't keep up with the current amount of cases being reported what happens when more people start coming forward? We all need to take domestic violence more seriously and make it a top priority.
