To say it was an honor to be part of the welcoming home the veterans from their "honor flight" from Washington D.C. would be an understatement. I really didn't know I was going to learn so much from this event.
One of my favorite parts of participating was the looks on each veterans faces when they saw us waiting to greet them home. Most of them said "if I knew such pretty ladies where going to be here I would have cleaned up." They made me feel like I was a celebrity but in all reality they are the true celebrities, since they fought for our freedom and what we stand for today, all I did was show up with a big smile and a goal to thank each veteran for their service.
I enjoyed speaking with some of the veterans about their trip, their time in the war, and general life topics. Each veteran had their own story on why being part of the honor flight was a dream come true and what it meant to them. One of the veterans shared his keys to a long healthy relationship as he and his wife have been married for 67 years now. He said there are two main things you need to know and if you can master these life will be good; 1) never go to bed angry and 2) a relationship is a give and take, as their will be times you have to give up something for your other half and they will do the same. They seem like such simple ideas but many of us forget this.
I also enjoyed meeting some of the family members of the veterans and the stories they had to share about what it meant to them that their father, mother, grandfather or grandmother got to participate in the honor flight.
I look forward to participating in more honor flight activities in the future. It reminded me how important it is to take time to listen to the past generations and that they have a lot of important things to teach us and we need to listen.
To all veterans and active duty members I salute you and thank you for your service!!
