I had a great time participating in Relay for Life - Allen. It was an inspiration to see all of the cancer survivors and their family and friends walking for a difference. I was surprised how many middle school and high school participants there were and that they wanted to make a difference, I am so proud of our youth today.
The most touching part of the night was the luminaria ceremony as it is a time to remember those we have lost and those that are still fighting the battle. As participants walk the track lined with luminara bags in reflection, a caregiver who has lost a loved one may find comfort from a fellow caregiver who has faced a similar loss. Meanwhile, a survivor gains hope and strength from others who have followed the same journey and survived. All resolve to keep fighting to save more lives so no more luminaria bear the names of those lost to the disease. In the bleachers the luminaria ceremony starts with the spelling out of HOPE.
H: HOPE - everyone with cancer and those who surround them must have hope and we must embrace it as we awaken a new day.
O: ONE DAY AT A TIME - symbolizes what people who are afflicted with cancer are taught, but everyone should live there lives, one day at a time.
P: PROGRESS - it is with progress that a cure is obtainable.
E: END - know that it is what ends the word, but by all means is not the end of the word, it is just the beginning of what all of us hold in our heart of hearts. Then while we are walking around the track in silences to remember those we have lost the word changes from HOPE to CURE. The word cure stands for what we are all here for tonight. The want and the need to find the cure for all cancers so no one has to lose another friend or family member again.
